When I was stationed at Fort Hood in 1970s we generally drove to Austin on payday weekend to hit the $#@/& bars. We didn't even think about staying local. As military policeman it probably wouldn't have been wise to play in our own kitty box. There's an old expression that you don't crap where you eat. Out of all of the assaults and the domestic violence calls and everything else that we had the one I remember the most is this very attractive Airman that was doing 60 on the road leading to Fort Hood Airfield. She was driving a military one ton and so she got a military citation that just went to her unit. No cash out of her pocket. Man was she pissed! It might not be so good to meet her in one of the local bars. Or the guys that we met various assault calls. Whatever it might be. So we made the drive and we had a routine about it. We never once had to worry about getting shot. The only thing we had to worry about was getting two phone numbers from two separate girls at the same arcade. Those girls of University of Texas at Austin. OMG. And they sure did love soldiers!

I've told a little story to tell you folks why we is MP's chose to party out of town but I really didn't intend to take the focus off of this young Soldier. I am very sad to hear about this young man. Probably playing with somebody's girl without knowing it and her boyfriend showed up or something similar to that. Could be a darker side but I won't speculate out of respect. Rest in peace brother.

SPC Joseph Kopac you mean they gave you an M16 and an event that could turn violent with no ammunition in the mag? Sounds like the army. We weren't even allowed to put a MAG in during field exercises to help keep our weapon clean.

Yep, we all had 16’s. Just for show. The 1st Cavalry and 2nd Armored participated in this event. We were then transported to LBJ’s ranch for the final event.

SPC Randy Zimmerman also? That was the height of Vietnam. Do you think that had anything to do with it? A lot of troops came from Fort Hood. I know because when I got there in the 70so I had the pleasure of working with some of them as a military policeman and I've got to say with no disrespect to them whatsoever that they should not have been on the road. PTSD. It was very real. I walked up behind the sergeant I was going to be working with one day and patted him on the back and next thing I know he reeled around and went for my throat. No, he shouldn't have been on the road. I can imagine that there was a lot of domestic violence and what not involving soldiers that lived off post and that may have affected community sentiment towards soldiers. There's a lot of factors icann think of that made you feel unwelcome. But then they put in a Sonic burger and a Church's Fried Chicken right outside the east gate and the world lived in harmony once again. I love me some Church's fried chicken. I think it's better than KFC.

SPC Joseph Kopac we did the same deal in Birmingham Alabama. We were at AIT and they loaded us up on buses and we marched in a parade. I couldn't tell you what the parade was about except that it occurred sometime between July and December.
