Most of his detractors had nearly lost the War East of the Appalachians and failed to understand the Maneuver Strategy that kept driving Lee's Confederates South towards Richmond. Lee always fought a good defensive battle, was on his home turf and much shorter interior lines, so he was able to avoid the defeats of West of the Appalachians simple because he could keep his Army in front of Grant's objectives, no matter what the cost. IMO, Robert E Lee was the real butcher, his casualties during his two offensive campaigns were appalling and he had to know that he was fighting a losing battle after the Fall of Atlanta and the inability of the rest of the Confederacy to contain Sherman.
