He was trying to do what was best for his crew, and he got burned for it. Kudos to the crew for recognizing that their Captain was in their corner.

While I understand your sentiment, I have to respectively disagree. Any Captain that loses control and then panders to the news and crew is no leader. We can be at war any minute with anyone, he needs to understand that. We can only hope not too many others were promoted in accordance with the Peter Principle. MHO

Being a Commanding Officer is not a popularity contest, one of my past COs was probably one of the most disliked, he retired as a VADM. If I were to have had to go to war, he would have been my choice, fearless and mean. Joe Williams, Jr. VADM
