Brief explanation of the N95 mask used by health care workers. Note it intercepts .3 micron particles and the other loser fitting masks do not. That is why they are used with this specific virus by health care workers and the valve that keeps them cool on inside which reduces perspiration which prolongs their life. 3M is not the only manufacturer, Milwaukee Electric Tool makes them for safety purposes (Concrete cutting, dust reduction, etc). So as I mentioned to someone else, all those people that you see wearing the lose fitting masks that do not seal against the skin. Does not offer the same level of protection as the N95, additionally, you really need eye protection as well. Also when removing a face mask such as this you should never touch the front of the mask always remove via the straps in back likewise before placing it on your face you should wash your hands first. Also, note they are disposable masks there is a specific time period you can wear them for and then you have to dispose of them.

I will add to this. The recent change in CDC recommendations for the general public to wear some sort of mouth covering has been added to the general precautions as an additional method to mitigate spread. Loose sitting surgical masks, scarves, dust masks, and home-made devices are meant to capture and control droplets of spittle that may contain virus particles. There are many folks out there that have little to no symptoms but have COVID-19 infections (and don't realize it). The use of face coverings in areas were you can not maintain at least 6-feet distance, will help contain the spread.
Also, the 6-foot distance is based on the average distance that typical mouth emissions travel. Things such as excited yelling (children, for example), sneezing and coughing can and do send clouds of potentially infected particles beyond that distance. I encourage folk to increase that distance if they are near folks that do not wear masks.
