'Combat' Engineer. I and one other combat engineer were with Charlie Company 2nd battalion sweeping near the Cambodian border in January of 1967. We started taking sniper fire and a Sgt. sent us back about 10 meters to be 'rear' guard. We could hear sniper fire over our heads. After a bit the sniper fire stopped, but no one came to relieve us. We took it upon ourselves to go back and check. There was no one there! In the confusion we were forgotten! Finally another company came up on us and a Sgt. asked WTF? We hooked up with them until we came upon Charlie company. No one said a word. The next day was when that Sgt. asked if I had a CIB yet. . He didn't ask the other soldier about it. He was only on his first mission with the grunts.

Vic, a similar incident occurred with me (CE demo man) when I was assigned to 25th Division infantry company (1/27). Company commander directed me to destroy an exposed dud 175 artillery round and left two grunts with me while the rest of the company moved across an open area and into a wood line about 400 yards away. While I set a C-4 charge, the two assholes booked it back to the company even before I lit the fuse and left me alone about two hundred fifty yards behind their retreating backs. This left me to hump across the open area on my own as a firefight had begun in the new wooded position; luckily, I made it back to unit. Thought hard about "fragging" those two with my M79 but gathered my senses and left it lay.
