the absolute worse punishment I ever saw was when my boss was called into the CG's office due to something that went wrong. My boss owned up to it, said he was wrong and would correct the action to make sure it never happened again. The CG got up close to him and said very softly so only my boss could hear, "I'm disappointed in you. You let me down." My boss turned ashen white and looked like he got kicked in the gut.

All soldiers and even civilian employees want to be appreciated for what they do. They try to be pleasing and liked by superiors, unless they have already developed a bs attitude. The CG could have done a number of things to my boss, and if he was military, could have done even more. But his comment, said only for my bosses ears were more devastating than any punishment.

Very true, SSG Randy Talbot .
Contrary to what the article says, the most memorable specific criticism comes not with knife hands and volume, but with a quiet "I have thought this through and am disappointed, not angry" voice. You know the person telling you that was on your side and believed in you, but you failed them.
It's like bringing your fiance home to meet your parents and realizing your mother has the same expression as when the cousins who chew open-mouthed came over for dinner.

With the exception of #2 and #6, none of that would fly nowadays. That's sure how I was brought up though!
