Man shot in New Mexico at protest over statue of Spanish conquistador

We can all disagree on the motivations of different statues in public places but in no way should anyone justify the actions that resulted in the shooting of a protester or bystander. I will be curious to see the justification given by the shooter since this article says shots were fired as protesters approached him; so I expect the "self-defense" legal defense will be applied by the lawyers.
