I have frequently heard people say that it's the weather that beat the French and the Germans when they invaded Russia. I suppose that's just Russian propaganda to keep potential invaders from learning the truth...

That’s absolutely correct Jack. No army will conquer General winter , at least not the Russian winter.

MSG Glen Miller - The Russians deal with it. No I think there is more. From what I've studied it appears that the Russians have been blessed with good generals as well as a hardy population truly dedicated to the land (they are the descendants of Vikings) As for strategy, in both the French and Nazi invasions, they employed defense in depth and were willing to surrender icons (even Moscow) to draw the enemy deeper into Russian thereby extending their lines of supply and communication well beyond their maximums. No, I don't believe it was winter alone, not by a long shot

Agree, it was not General winter alone. Usually, there is never just one factor that makes one lose a battle or war. Both Napoleon and Hitler had great difficulties supplying their troops with the necessary items like winter clothing. The Russians, on the other hand, were prepared for the cold. Furthermore, the Russians had there war machine way behind the Ural mountains and they were not bombed on an hourly basis like the german factories. And another point for the Russians was that they received massive war materials from the US. Neither Napoleon nor Hitler had these luxuries. And lastly yes the Russians had good Generals until most of them were exterminated by the psychopaths Stalin.
