Based on research I have conducted, Putin was actually afraid of a H. Clinton presidency. He understood she would assume a much tougher stance w/ him. In part, this prompted massive Russian interference in the election to clearly favor Trump and hurt Clinton. And Putin knows exactly how to bend Trump to his will!
