Pain is weakness leaving the body is what my drill sergeant used to tell us. I want to basic training with the ability to do 50 push UPS already. I went in at age 31. One junior drove sergeant tried talking to me from the front leaning rest with my toes of my boots on the bleachers and doing a pushup in slow motion only while talking to me. I was the oldest guy in my unit and I was a specialist. After that drill sergeant notify didn't suffer while he was talking to me, I didn't do that again. This was just a mess with me because I didn't do anything except I was a specialist as old as the drill sergeant. This was back in 1994.

I had to squat in the chair position, arms extended and the DI’s coffee cup on the back of my hand. Pushups? Better than bend and thrust or swimming in a sand swimming pool.
