Sept. 2, 1963 - State Funds Private School to Avoid Integration

On Seprember 2, 1963, Alabama Governor George Wallace prevented the integration of Tuskegee High School. Days later, White parents began withdrawing their children until there were no White children enrolled. After they were enrolled in a private school, Governor Wallace provided state funds to white students to avoid integration.

I’m a graduate of Tuskegee Institute High School, class of 79 and Tuskegee Institute class of 84.
The hate was so strong back then, when the buses use to past each other on the highway, think of all the things you could imagine being yelled out the windows between the students. Macon Academy is closed now and TIHS is now Tuskegee Middle School and the HS is now called Booker T Washington.
