Bit of trivia: Many believe Wallace wrote Ben Hur to erase the stain on his name from the Battle of Shiloh. He commanded the reserve division, and when ordered to advance, he moved to support Sherman's division, but Sherman had been driven back. When Wallace approached the battle, he had the opportunity to drive a fresh division into the left rear of the Confederate attack at about 2:30 PM, but backed off, and reversed his troops to take a different road that would bring him in behind Sherman, as intended. Had he attacked the Confederate left rear, he probably would have been the hero of the battle, but by counter marching and realigning on poor roads he did not bring his reserve division into action until after 6 PM and became the goat, instead.
