I still crisply remember the Guard at Kent State killing some protesters. I am ambivalent by their role. Perhaps active military can be mobilized to combat violent domestic insurrection. G. Washington ordered military during the Whiskey Rebellion. I believe this is the only example.

Kent State was a long time ago. The National Guard has augmented civil authority dozens if not hundreds of times since then without similar incident.

SFC Thomas Foreman - I served from 1969 to 1973 so it is still imprinted in my experience. I'm glad to acknowledge your clarification.

SSgt Richard Kensinger anyone associated with the National Guard will admit we were a clown show up into the late 90’s. The Persian Gulf was *started* to shift the dynamic to get better funding, gear and training, and then 9/11 and the aftermath accelerated the process. Many NG units nowadays are indistinguishable (especially in support units) from their active duty counterparts.
