The third day of the war, Jan 19, 1991. After permitting only F-117s (at night) and cruise missiles to go “downtown” to Baghdad, someone thought, “Hey, you know what would be really neat? We should send 72 conventional F-16s on a strike!” They ran out of anti-radar missile on the WAY IN. Then the MiGs showed up. The primary target was not destroyed. Two pilots were shot down and captured in the city streets, Maj Jeff Tice and Capt Mike Roberts, both from 614th TFS. No further conventional attacks were attempted; only F-117s would continue flying downtown (with a single bullet hole).
