Nice article. The second Punic war was a war of attrition. Hannibal did not have the resources to destroy the city of Rome. Going up and down Italy served him no purpose of winning the war because he could not destroy Rome. Destroying Rome was the objective to win the war, but was incapable of executing that.

I believe the Romans captured a Carthaginian ship and took it apart to determine its design. There is a school of thought that believes the Romans massed produced ships based on the captured ship. That is how they built a navy quickly.
