I happen to agree. Education on this vital area is important. As a kid learning Civics I was never much interested in government so it was memorize, pass the test, forget about it. As a Marine, it was never talked about. Yet I could do courses on money management, field expedient antennas, bulk fuel management, and earn points towards my promotions up to E5. We sat through classes on the
Mỹ Lai massacre, sexual harassment and other topics. So why not the US Constitution and Bill of Rights?

No need. If there's anything Rallypoint and most Facebook veteran group comment sections have taught me, it's that everyone thinks they're already an expert on constitutional law, whether they've ever read the thing or not...

Why stop with the Dept of Education? Let's get rid of the departments of Justices, Defense, Energy, the Interior, Agriculture, Etc. None of these are enumerated in the Constitution. At least, not specifically. As someone who claims to be well versed in the Constitution, surely you are aware of the power given to Congress under Article 1, Section 8, Chapter 18.

As to the subject of the article, I think such education should be given in the civilian world, long before one chooses to join whatever branch they choose. This is a course that should be given to everyone, not just the military. Why? Because we have enough to learn as recruits and upcoming NCOs without adding more. And, arguably, this is something we should already know before becoming functional citizens.

Col Joseph Lenertz - The same authority that gives Congress the power to create the Department of Defense, and place it under the jurisdiction of the Executive Branch, gives Congress the power to create the Department of Education, and place it under the jurisdiction of the Executive Branch. NO matter how much you want it to be, the Dept. of Education is not unconstitutional.

Of course, I fail to see what that has to do with educating servicemembers about the Constitution, or how knowing what Departments are constitutional and which are not would help a servicemember in the performance of his duties.

SGT Edward Wilcox - Wrong again. Armies and Navies (national defense) are mentioned, education not at all. I am unsurprised that you can't figure it out. If I were to follow your inane line of thinking, there would be NO LIMIT AT ALL on what Congress could do. This was certainly NOT the intent of the framers. I was pointing out that the federal government has increased its power vis-a-vis the states, and outside the limits demarcated in the constitution by the enumerated powers. You see, we just don't need a Dept of Education, and that power is given to the states, not the fed. Of course, leftists want ALL power consolidated in one center, to control everyone absolutely. They believe the people only exist to yield to government mandates and make corrupt politicians wealthy.

Col Joseph Lenertz The Constitution gives the power of defense to Congress, not the Executive. Nothing in the Constitution that prohibits Congress from creating a Department of Education, or any other department.

"...before becoming functional citizens." and who would make the starting point on that event? I know kids in the sixth grade smarter and more informed then the average 50 year old person...you'd be amazed at some of the tripe that comes out of my 75 year old neighbor...He claimed Obama was the best president we ever had and then turned around and said for a N*66**. I was flabergasted...I've since stopped talking to him as I don't need that kind of crap talk in my life or my kids lives. But he will tell you he is a well informed Liberal functional citizen...
