“The California coast is geologically young and therefore active; it’s alive and moving,” says Gary Griggs, Ph.D., PG, EngGeol, distinguished professor of Earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. “(The) Big Sur coast in particular is characterized by complex and diverse geology, active faults, very steep topography, (and) frequent brush/forest fires. And (it) can get intense precipitation.”
I so hate what professionals say something stupid like the land is "alive" and "moving"; moving yes, alive no. Of course they are trying to bring climate change into the reasoning. I've worked on many natural disasters like this in my life and I can tell you simply: The road doesn't belong in this location, it is unstable. The big question is how much money are we willing to spend to keep infrastructure where it doesn't belong, and will be destroyed again sooner or later.
