On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington; he died a day later. Secretary of State William H. Seward and his family were also attacked in their home by Lewis Powell as part of the same conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.
