While we start off with the right intention, more often than not, some greedy lawmakers get bought off by some richer and greedier guy.

I’m sure some get bought off. I would like to think most are doing what they think are the right thing. I can only speak for government engineering, but I’ve seen company’s flatter politicians to where the politicians trust the word of high-powered consultants over their own engineers. Sometimes positions are filled politically so the inexperienced government engineer plays it safe by just going along with consultants, if things go south, they can say: Hey were only listening to our professionals. It’s a mean game. Most don’t realize how much money is involved. Consultants are good to be used as a tool, but when given the power of the agency they are working for, well that's where the trouble starts in my opinion.

No, I have never worked for FEMA, I have worked with FEMA through many natural disasters over the last 35 years or so, in roles I worked for in Pa., specifically PennDOT and the PADEP-BAMR. I helped in a very small level reviewing state regulations for Pa. some time ago that gives me some insight into this stuff. I am a civil, structural, bridge, geotechnical engineer (among other types) who served time as a Utility Relocations Administrator and an Assistant County Maintenance Manager that gave me insight into design that many practicing engineers don’t have. I accepted management positions for more money that took me away from my first loves, and that made me more of a baby sitter than anything else. I guess we all make our deal with the devil. In any case I’m retired now.

CSM Darieus ZaGara - Thank you for recognizing my dedication. From the time I received my first DD214 to around 2005 I volunteered for any training and duties the Department offered. It was good working for an organization that allowed me to branch off into many different areas. Now while I am interested, I am more dedicated to my family that I always put behind my career earlier in my life.

Not necessarily so. As long as demolition and/or repairs are designed by a competent engineer it will be OK. Typically, when the government opens up regulations/building codes it sets off lobbing from different companies trying to gain an advantage over others in the procurement process. From a safety standpoint I don’t believe this will do much. Not being directly involved one can never be sure.
