Your parallel to the Desert one failure is interesting. The era blueprint for the daring commando raid to rescue hostages was actually the Son Toy raid at the end of the Vietnam War. Members of the Son Toy raid were in Desert One. Dick Meadows was a Delta Operator that bluffed his way into Iran with a suspect Irish accent and a bogus passport. He was on the Assualt element in Son Toy on the helicopter they crashed inside the camp. Of course there Was COL Charlie Beckwith. My guess is the style of the raid more mirrored the SAS school of thought as he was an exchange officer, commanding 3 Troop in the SAS and fought with them in Malasya

The primary difference in the two raids was that Israel, was believed not to have the operational capacity to execute it. So it was a total surprise. It put them on the map as people you do not screw with. They will hit back. Desert one was on the thinnest of margins. Almost everything had to go exactly right, majority of the aircraft had to make it to the ISB and to the Objective. The objective in Entebbe was reasonably isolated. Tehran was the belly of the beast, in the middle of a city.

Desert One had far more time to plan. Entebbe was done on he quick.

Israel was not believed to have the operational capacity to execute it? Interesting comment since they (Israel) started preparations to do this type of operation due to the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre; in which they vowed to never let something like that happen again.
Though the core of the initial response was targeted assassinations, it was also the basis for additional actions - Prime Minister Golda Meir state to the Knesset: "wherever a plot is being woven, wherever people are planning to murder Jews and Israelis - that is where we need to strike."

SSG Robert Webster - that was the internal Israeli reaction to Munich, yes absolutely. The rest of the world did not really consider Entebbe possible. One of the key things in the Israeli's favor is they eventually knew every inch of that airport. An Israeli construction company built the terminal and the rehearsal mock up. The chief obstacle was aerial refueling, eventually Kenya yielded and let them refuel there.

The Israeli Air Force now has Air to air refueling capability which makes Iran nervous, giving them the capability to hit deep in Iran with no help from other nations.

A couple of us were just discussing this movie. I liked the Bronson version, but want to see this one as well. Hopefully they do the story justice.

I watched the movie with Bronson in it tonight, my thoughts were that if nothing else, they should have inserted a least 2 sniper teams. At least 2 days before the raid. They had a pretty accurate idea of who the terrorist were from the released hostages. The IDF landed 4 C-130s on the airfield. How they got away with that one I guess will never know. I think ours would have stacked the C-130s in a known air traffic lae do a HiLo jump. Once secure then land and evac everyone. MSG Dan Walther
