Cheering is the first that comes to mind SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
1. After winning a VA claim or appeal, be sure to safeguard past-due benefits. [don't be foolish. Some information should be kept close. Pay off any debts you may have with lump sum payments.]
2. Be sure you are signed up for direct deposit from the VA. [critical requirement]
3. Consider whether you should enroll in VA health care. [if you over 50% VA disabled and have conditions that the VA is excellent at treating such as orthopedic, burns, etc. consider using VA care. If you have no other insurance, use the VA.]
4. Sign up for additional benefits after winning a VA claim. [don't hold your breath unless you are in very bad health from service-related conditions.]
5. Research state benefits for disabled veterans. [good idea]
6. Appeal for the correct effective date and/or challenge the impairment rating.
7. File VA claims for increase.

Great information SFC Joe S. Davis Jr.,! I found that the most difficult part of the Award, any Award, is the Effective Date. God, those bastards are tight with the money and they do not like to go too far back. I'm still fighting them on a couple of issues about what my Effective Date should be. Of course, do you actually think that they will go back to the late 60s when I was actually in Nam? Hell no! But I'm still fighting!

I would also add besides having your favorite adult beverage in celebration:
1. Check to see what additional FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY, & CITY benefits you may have for you AND your spouse. I live in CA. If you are a service connected veteran (meaning ZERO to 100%), your children are eligible to go to any University of CA or Cal State University school TUITION FREE.
2. If you are rated 50% SC or higher, you no longer have a co-pay on ANY medication you receive from the VA. If you are under 50%, you don't have a co-pay on those medications for your SC issues only.
3. At a rating of 30% or more, you can add your spouse & children as your dependents for additional monies.
4. Should any of your SC issues be the cause of your demise & your married, your widow(er) or surviving child under 18 not covered under the widow(er) can apply for Death Indemnity Compensation (DIC) http://benefits.va.gov/compensation/types-dependency_and_indemnity.asp
