Good post and article. Pay is low for junior enlisted, but singles get barracks lodging and mess hall food. Some married enlisted require food stamps, but it is often due to providing for children

You do realize that military members have a shit ton of perks provided by the government? BAS, BAH, Meal cards, Tricare, SGLI, Barracks, education just off the top of my head. These are things the Government pays for, not the servicemember.

SSG Robert Perrotto You forgot about 30 days paid vacation, which is worth 9% of the annual salary; this does not include the numerous Federal holidays, many are turned into 4-day weekends, for an additional 10-20 days off per year. Christmas is often day-on-day-off, for another 5-7 days. Dental care for SMs, free/low-cost health care for life through VA, and many injuries are covered by VA. Veterans get bonus points when applying to many government jobs; job training can translate to a lucrative civilian career. I’m sure that I have left out some financial perks of military service. Four years of belt-tightening compared to a lifetime of the pride of being a veteran: priceless.

if Congress can't agree to take serious crime prosecution away from commanders, there's no way they'll pass this

they shouldn't pass this. Military members get a shit ton of perks from the Government while serving. Where else can you get a 4 year degree, without touching your GI bill, paid for by the government without loans? Meal Cards? BAS, BAH? Medical? Barracks?? Life Insurance??
