There are several weird things that can occur in swimming, one is a condition called swim induced pulmonary edema, another is a condition that occurs with repeatedly holding your breath, the person just passes out sometimes under water. Read a story about a couple of folks having under water races from one end of pool to the other. At the end of one race one of the participants was sitting on the bottom of the pool. People thought he was clowning around, he wasn’t. Finally people realized there was a problem and got him out of the water in time. We will wait and see what happened.

Lots of things can go wrong as you said, I am leaning to the shallow water blackout. Regardless the cause the community has lost a great warrior. The Combat Diver Course needs to figure this one out.

One time I tried to swim round trip under water at a pool. I passed out right before I touched the wall which was the finish line.

LTC Jeff Shearer - I think one problem is the warrior spirit. The folks are tough and single minded and that gets them where they are. So they try to push through. We have hummingbirds. They constantly fight over feeders etc, it is their nature. It is in the nature of these warriors not to quit, even when physical problems are developing.
