Don't get me wrong... innovation can be a good (even great) thing. Most of the time however, all it seems to do is screw up what was working perfectly fine in the first place. It's why I truly believe the ONLY people involved in developing new type/class designs should be engineers working for leadership responsible for operational tasking. Any "political" influence should be reserved for when it's time for the "Great They" to decide between two (or even one) well-vetted options.

LCDR Joshua Gillespie Completely agree ! When I was Chief Engineer, I would be brought all these "Awesome" things that will make the lives of my engineers so much better. Not a one of them was made or designed by anyone who had actually been a ship's engineer. Had one idiot tell me the handheld computer he was selling was "sailor proof" and he told me to do whatever I wanted it would take it. Dropped it down a main space escape hatch and it shattered into 100's of pieces. The look on his face was complete shock ! He said they never thought to drop test it. Told him he was an idiot then, and never come back to my ship.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen The propulsion plant design was horrendous. Completely understand the idea behind it, but instead of using an off the shelf proven technology the Swedes and Norwegians already had, they decided to try something "new". No one that was a real seagoing engineer thought this was a good idea. This was a design made up in a lab by people who never served on a ship. Since the propulsion plant and associated gear, is one of the largest prices on a ship, and they have no idea how to fix it, there was no choice but to close the project down. Tons of money flushed down the tubes...
