Unfortunately, if it was just left to people’s morals to make these decisions, they wouldn’t be made, because I’ve found that nepotism actually looks like racism. They’re similar, like cousins. You may not be racist, but if all you do is what’s immediately comfortable to you, like hiring your best friend’s son or just within your network, you end up with a bunch of people who look and act like you, and share your perspective.

That’s how teams end up with all White people. And the same is true for teams of all Black people. The point is that you’re not hiring outside your network. It feels like racism because people who are not part of that immediate network can’t get in. And, unfortunately, most people’s networks are not diverse.

This resonates for me because it speaks to truth; we tend to surround ourselves with those we are comfortable with.

It is the truth ma'am. I've seen it change in my life time in working at DOT and DEP. We made our organizations much more diverse, but people don't want to give us any credit, it seems they want that instant outcome regardless of a person's qualifications. When one goes down that road of lowering standards so anyone can make it, well it puts the organization into a downward spiral that most just won't recover from. There are a number of reasons from this from the rationalization this interview speaks of, to the low moral an organization has when people realize unqualified people are getting ahead of them. It’s pretty much that simple. I won’t bore you with more of my thoughts.

We used to call this "paying your dues" but that's out of fashion. If you get promoted above your experience and education, you are in real danger of failing when you might have been really successful if you'd worked your way up. I've seen that too.
