Nothing can scare me more than one lazy hot sunny afternoon when I was in the middle of Walter F. George (circa 1985) in a very small canoe casting a blank rubber nightcrawler across one side of the bow and reeling it in over the other side. I was almost in a trance, and then as I reeled my rubber nightcrawler crossed the bow it was being followed less that a foot away by a gar that I swear had to be over 6 foot. I jerked my rubber nightcrawler out of the water and stopped fishing for the day! If I had caught that gar I would still be going for a ride. :)
