On September 9, 1675, the New England colonies declared war on Wampanoag Indians in what is called King Philip's War.
"King Philip’s War—also known as the First Indian War, the Great Narragansett War or Metacom’s Rebellion—took place in southern New England from 1675 to 1676. It was the Native Americans' last-ditch effort to avoid recognizing English authority and stop English settlement on their native lands. The war is named after the Wampanoag chief Metacom, later known as Philip or King Philip, who led the fourteen-month bloody rebellion."

SGT Mary G. That's the advantage of growing up there. Most of the things and places we read about in American history were a field trip away.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - That is one reason I loved Fort Lee VA, the field trip aspect of it - Civil War bunkers, but it also has Revolutionary War history too. Still making up for what I didn't learn then. Learned a lot about more about colonization of the SW from local New Mexico history after moving here. I suppose it happens nationwide, that the focus is on state history for school kids.

SGT Mary G. Funny, I've posted about loving wine but it wasn't until I had to make frequent TDY trips to Albuquerque that I learned that New Mexico was once a prime wine grape producing area. You're right though, states are going to focus on their history, especially for elementary school age kids.
