New Routes Added to America’s Marine Highway Program

Once upon a time, I traveled 1200 miles down rivers from Indiana to Panama City Florida... The lock systems that have been built up through the years is nothing short or miraculous. Some of them dropped you straight up or down as much as nearly a hundred feet. The river would drop you straight down a hundred feet, or up, depending on which way you were going.... There is one river called the Tom Bigby Waterway, and they control which way the water flows in the river. I think you'd have to experience it to really understand the magnitude of it. Oh, we passed by hundreds of barges being pushed by tug boats like in the picture, some tugs would be pushing as many as 10 barges full....
