On-duty fatal accidents plummet across Army, but off-duty ones rise

The Army lost fewer soldiers to on-duty training accidents in fiscal 2021 than in “any other reporting period on record,” officials from the service’s Combat Readiness Center said in an Oct. 21 release.
According to safety data from the release, only 20 soldiers died in on-duty accidents this past fiscal year. Nine of those deaths occurred in ground accidents, and 11 soldiers died in aviation crashes, including five who died in Egypt in November 2020 when a stabilizer failed on their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.

Good news to a point. Deaths are never what we want to hear. Mechanical failure is always a total bummer because one never knows if a part has a internal crack. However, road accidents are just plain stupid. I found it was always hard to get training money for anything much less driving. They always seemed to think driving a jeep equaled driving a 12 ton M113. Not BSing, I had my track drivers end up at wheeled vehicle school once. I knew plenty of guys who got banged up off post. All from stupid stuff.
