Before the disintegration of the Soviet Union, I read a book called The Russians. It described the Soviet Union was an oligarchy of wealthy factory owners and high ranking governmental leaders. Production was often based on contracts to build things that were not needed. I believe an example was producing bumpers for cars that did not exist. That is how inefficient the market was. After reading the book, I expected the Soviet Union to implode.
