You went a bit too far with this one, Joe.

I know this is what the site calls for and caters to, but you are off base with your attacks on teachers.

First, Teachers are required to be certified in their field. This includes competency. Most parents simply could not pass certification in any specific topic. And the overwhelming majority could not pass in ALL topics.

So yes, those teachers DO have a higher level of understanding than the parents. That doesn't make them always right, and it doesn't mean parents should have no input. But putting the entire profession on blast as incompetent idiots who know next to nothing is over the top.

Additionally, your "I was an education major once" concept is exactly the same as the "I almost joined the Army." You thought about becoming an educator. But you didn't. So your "expertise" is worth two things, the first of which is jack. You can probably guess the second.

No, they don't, or at least here in KS they don't. I have an MA in English, and if I could prove competency via the DoE test, I could teach algebra if I wanted.
Most teachers can barely pass competency, and I assure you, most new teachers probably struggled through their undergrad programs.
And, no, the statements aren't comparable just because the wording is the same. Maybe similar to "I thought about infantry but went common instead," but even within the military it wouldn't be comparable to I almost enlisted.
I chose a different path specifically because of what I experienced in education, i.e. I reclassed.
And as far as what is taught, one can look this up. I still have many of my textbooks if you like. Additionally. Many of my materials still dealt with pedagogical practice in relation. To rhetoric and composition, so I still have education commensurate with that teachers receive.

The attack is warranted. Teachers are not the arbiters of arcane knowledge. They are just people who went to college, and that doesn't mean nearly as much as it once did.
