One of the big struggles I deal with as "not the manager". After my 2nd yearly review at my current company, promises made and forgotten, being shuffled to the side but told I am a valuable member of the team I find that I am more interested in finding what else is out there than making this my "home" for the long term.

Being a retired civil servant I am very familiar with being an unwanted stepchild. I am glad I am past it now. :) Oddly enough I found that being a good manager, I still lose my people. Working for a relatively small bureau I would get people trained, with nowhere for them to go. :( I just received a call from my last departure who is working up in Fairbanks now. He wanted to catch up at Christmas.

Did he drive the 30 minutes south to North Pole, AK to make the call? Being Christmas and all, Santa's shop has been open there for, what, 50+ years now?
