Fascinating stuff! Makes sense since the closure of the Tethys Sea created the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
"At the bottom of the eastern Mediterranean Sea lies the world’s oldest oceanic crust, according to a new study.
Dr. Roi Granot of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel has discovered that an oceanic crust that has been hiding in the sea’s sediment-ridden waters may have been part of the ancient Tethys Ocean, according to a release from the university."

LTC (Join to see) - Sounds like a very interesting series. Will watch. Would be interesting to see the Mediterranean as a topic in that series. Analysis of the stratigraphy suggests it was a desert at one time whether or not totally without water - then flooded at the Gibraltar entrance.
