My boot camp in 1969 was 13 weeks! It got us ready for life in the fleet! That's what boot is for to get you ready for life in the military no matter what branch you serve in! I could go into a complete tirade here about today's military, but I will not!

Right there with you. Training has gotten too laxed and sensitive. Break em down and build em back up as a cohesive unit that you could trust in the field. Now they have stress cards and quite spaces..

I spent 13 weeks with these guys and we were from all over, but mostly from NY, PA, and NJ! In the end were became one unit and were scattered to the 4 winds when out time in Great Lakes had come to and end! I would do it all over again with this same bunch of guys!

Giving this cautious approval. I was not in favor of 6 week trying. My boot camp in the 60s was 12 weeks. Down to 8 weeks followed by 2 weeks apprentice training or "A" school 79 - 83 when I pushed. MCPO Hilary Kunz we brought back M-14s) Continual complaints from RTCs about 8 weeks being insufficient at that time. So this 10 week change is a step in the right direction. ( here comes the but monkey) BUT, it appears from the article the add'l two weeks is to root out "extremism". Whatever that is -- undefined. I understand that of all the AD military, they had 100 people with undefined “extremist” views, . Squirrel hunting with a 12 ga, but we also need to straighten things out.
One of my security force was raised in the IRA, left Ireland and joined the Navy. He quickly became my go to on IEDs. Would he be an extremist? He was a great Sailor.

No flattery intended (but if you take it on board as such that's OK, too). The problem is not extremists in the ranks, but piss poor leadership. Much like you, when I was a CPO on boomer tenders, my shops - carpenter, pattern, foundry, DC, lock, canvas, rubber & plastic - were get well tours for substandard sub-qualed sailors. Didn't hurt my career a bit.

CWO4 Terrence Clark - way off topic, I had a sub qual Chief that NPQd so they sent him to sea on a large deck amphib. Very impressive dude, he qualified Surface, then Air. The only triple qualified that I saw, ever.

MCPO Hilary Kunz Demonstrates how well high standards and high expectations work to provide the sailors we want. Even rubbed off on us skimmers working on the tenders.

So it is official, the Navy's Boot Camp is just as long as Band Camp..... (just poking fun at the Navy).
