Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the February 7th Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Umbrella Galaxy." The Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope is located atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Also known as NCG 4651, The Umbrella Galaxy lies some 50 million light years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. The "cosmic parasol" is believed to be the tidal trail of a smaller galaxy that passed relatively close to NCG 4651. Anyone for Mardi Gras in the heavens?
