Article ID-ed a good number of points that add value. Odd there was little mention that part in parcel with leading and mentoring = the importance of *retaining* top talent (i.e., Cuba Gooding-speak). Told one boss that I loved working there and wanted to stay but couldn’t afford to unless the company showed some (bankable) love. Worked out and I got the bump up. Same situation elsewhere and it was no dice so had to cash up elsewhere. It’s not all about $$$; but, if pay and perks don’t stay competitive, people walk.

So true I left a company after 3 years having developed a system on 3rd shift with 1/3 the manpower our production matched 1st shift production. When implemented across all shifts saved the company 5 million annually. Got a certificate of achievement and a promotion that only increased my salary by 1500 a year. Heck the DOD suggestion program back then awarded you 10% of the savings. Heck would would have been happy for 1/2%, 25k. But no got hired away for 15k more than I was making at the other place. This was in the mid 90's.

You got that right. Being a state civil servant most of my professional career I can tell you if you don't have some sort of political godfather, you just go so far. I could have many times over, but I just couldn't bring myself to it.

MAJ Roland McDonald - What you wrote took me back years, I started typing a long history, too long. Long story short: I retired a year and a half ago and they had to break my section my section into 2, to bring in (hide) another manager. Now they still can’t handle the permitting, so they are thinking of making another section just for permits. People have retired before their normal retirement date because they weren’t getting the guidance they needed. It breaks my heart. I recommended organizational changes over the years and our Director and Deputy Secretary just made out like I was a quack. I feel bad for my people but there is nothing I can do for them. Some have transferred out. Government never fails.
