Interesting article for those nearing separation and/or job hunting. I worked as a recruiter right after I retired from the military and have to admit I didn't pay much attention to cover letters. BUT the people who screened applications before they came to my desk did and often told me a good cover letter determined where in the stack an application would sit.
Should you include a cover letter?

It helps the Person interviewing you come straight to the point and not tarry hard on their valuable time.

Some good advice in the article and agree that a well-crafted cover letter can help a resume’s ranking during the pre-screening process. The HR departments where I worked tossed many submittals because the applicant’s writing in the cover letter was so bad and or the resume didn’t even come close to indicating the candidate had the experience and qualifications for the clearly stated job requirements (or even the potential to do the job). Of those that made the cut to a phone interview screen and ultimately a face-to-face, surprising how many couldn’t clearly articulate how their background might be a fit (i.e., sell themselves). In a good number of cases it was attributable to the individual having paid top dollar to get a professionally (sic) written C.V. (and cover letter) that passed the eyeball test; but, when questioned, couldn’t back it up (or at least communicate with confidence) that they were as smooth as the prose they had submitted.

Yes, one of the things I learned to pick up on early as a recruiter. Too many get a resume prepared then broadcast it out with no attempt to tailor it to the requirements of a specific position. Most of those never made it to my desk.
