Can you explain why 15-20% of blacks killed by police are unarmed? Out of the 1,141 people killed by police last year, that means that between 171 and 228 unarmed citizens were killed last year by the police.

Every time a police encounter with an unarmed citizen is deadly, the police withhold evidence, especially video, to make the "bad guy" look at fault! Isn’t fascism fun?

SFC Casey O'Mally - All of the examples you mentioned using tasers, knives, scissors, baseball bats, and the like are armed. I'm talking about no weapons at all, of any type. And some of those, like the examples of Michael Brown and Ashli Babbit, who were both unarmed, are justifiable shootings. Others, like the Gardena case, are probably not.

My point is that less than 100 police officers are killed by felonious assault, and fewer than 200 typically die in the line of duty. But ten times that number of unarmed civilians die every year at the hands of police, a statistic that has been remarkably stable over the last 10 years or so.

LTC David Brown - Don't be an idiot. No, it's not "OK to shoot cops." But one example of someone who was unarmed and justifiably shot doesn't justify the bad shootings either.

I'm merely pointing out that it is far deadlier to be stopped by the police than to be a police officer.

Capt Gregory Prickett Sir, no argument here. I agree that the number of civilians killed by cops is too high.

And I will continue to argue (as I believe you would, as well) that the cases should be looked at INDIVIDUALLY, and let the specific circumstances of the case determine whether or not it was a "good shoot." And I will continue to give the cop the benefit of the doubt, all other things being equal. But DESPITE that, yes, the aggregate of people killed by cops is deeply concerning. The number for ALL races , as well as the total, is concerning. And the fact that black and Latino men seem to be killed at an even higher rate than white or other minorities is doubly concerning.

I agree with all of that, 100%. I will make two minor counterpoints, though.

First, Cops aren't responsible for protecting just themselves. Cops can, and do, kill civilians when there is little to no threat to themselves, because there is an immediate threat to others. This will naturally skew the numbers some.

Second, cops are usually better armed. Attacking a cop with a baseball bat will often warrant use of force. In many cases it will warrant lethal force. But that baseball bat will put the cop in the hospital, while the cop puts the assailant in the morgue. This also skews the numbers. An argument can obviously be made about the cops using less lethal means - and most police departments have implemented strategies to do just that. But an equally valid argument (IMO) can be made about the stupidity of using a baseball bat to attack anyone who is fully armed. The whole "bring a knife to a gun fight" thing.

Neither of those counterpoints EXCUSE the discrepancy. Especially when the discrepancy is so vast. And they are labeled as MINOR counterpoints for a reason. But, while they do not excuse the discrepancy, I believe they may explain - to some small degree - PART of the discrepancy.

I believe you and I are in 99% agreement here. We are just talking about specific shades of grey.

By Mike Manzoni and Marc Fortier • Published April 25, 2022 • Updated on April 25, 2022 at 8:01 pm

“Patrick Rose, the former president of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association charged with raping and abusing six children over nearly three decades, changed his plea to guilty.

A former head of Boston's police union facing a total of 33 charges in connection with the rape and abuse of six children over various periods of time beginning in the 1990s pleaded guilty Monday.

Patrick Rose had previously pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence, but changed his plea during an appearance in Suffolk Superior Court.

He pleaded guilty to 21 counts of child rape and sexual assault over a 27-year period and was sentenced to 10 to 13 years in prison, plus 10 years probation following his release.”

The leftists and the progressives created this environment. I'm not sure why the results are so surprising.
