Being a drill sergeant for me was teaching and mentoring young troops to prepare them for combat. Was there tough love? Sure. Did I incoherently scream at troops? No. It is important to be loud and clear enough to ensure they understand the instructions. Tough realistic combat training was the order of the day, everyday. It was important to reel in Drill Sergeants who were doing unnecessary stuff. The stress cards stuff is a myth by the way. It is very cringe hearing old folks use the word woke out of context for almost anything they don't like. The stress card myth started in the 90's and here is some information below.

Article mentions that ‘shark attack’ was meant for draftees. In volunteer army, the focus is on leading by example. Today’s drill sergeants use a “follow me” approach with to inspire instead of belittle

Yeah, the Army made a huge mistake with this, I was there during the transition and in addition it was made mandatory they receive their phones every week, really kind of was a night and day difference in terms of how the trainees act and follow instructions.
