Cool article, but have to take exception with the writing. First the author states, "As of 2011, however, silkies have been banned for wear during physical training". Then the author cites a Marine Corps Order (MCO) that in no way "bans" the wear of the silkies, then says "There is no written rule anywhere that states you can’t other than MCO 1020.34H", but MCO 1020.34H (Uniform regs) does not state Marines cannot wear green silkies. So they are not "banned", at least not at the Service level. However, commanders may issue restrictions for people under their command.
Also, to be clear, if something is specified in a MCO, then a MARADMIN is not required. A MCO is more authoritative than a MARADMIN, the only exception being when a MARADMIN is released to update or communicate a change to a MCO.
