Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Memorial Day 2022 edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Red Crepuscular Rays from an Eclipse." You've probably seen similar effects at either sunrise or sunset (e.g. twilight), but may have not known that it has a name. Sunbeams that originate from the Sun when it is just below the horizon are called crepuscular rays. Here we see the phenomenon as seen from Uruguay during the partial solar eclipse at sunset on April 30, 2022. Clouds obscured the eclipse itself, but provided this special payoff for patiently sticking around to see what was next.
