Both the US Navy and Air Force have been struggling to keep some planes ready to fly in recent years, and it’s only getting worse, according to a new watchdog report.
“Mission capable rates — a metric used to assess the health and readiness of an aircraft fleet — and other related maintenance metrics trends have worsened since fiscal year 2015 for eight selected aircraft,” the Government Accountability Office wrote in a report published Wednesday. “While the Air Force and Navy have initiatives to address unit-level maintenance challenges, neither service has mitigated persistent fixed-wing aircraft sustainment risks.”

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - That may be true Colonel but we should be prepared 100% of the time with all our planes.

Cpl Vic Burk Well, I sort of agree but 100% is unachievable. There will always be aircraft undergoing maintenance at wing and depot levels that make them non mission capable. Somewhere between 75-85% is a more realistic figure.

Spent way to many Stand Up Meetings discussing what can be done to get our MC rate up. Don't know how it is today but back then the MC rate figured prominently in a Wing Commander keeping his job. It's not necessarily a new problem but one that certainly deserves attention.
