Because no one cares? It's Mexico not the us. Mexico has an official language we don't. There is no federally recognized language here in the us. An that's because as immigrants came here form Europe they spoke the language of the country they came from. From our founding we have English, native languages, Spanish in Florida, dutch, German, French, polish, possible African tribal dialect of the slaves. We were always a bilingual nation. We've dumbed ourselves down technically. Most Americans can't speak more than one language despite being taught Spanish, German, Chinese, whatever in school.

PFC (Join to see) And you've got people that have been here for 10+ years that still can't speak English.
Maybe it's time we had an official language? But of course that would be racist.

Sgt (Join to see) There were people who came here off the boats from 1790-1950 who barely spoke English, they could understand very little. Our current citizenship requirements are to be able to understand English not necessarily speak it. The United States citizenship test is also official offered in nine languages and they are as follows: Spanish, Arabic, French, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Swahili and Vietnamese. So again as Mr.Gray cited only some founding fathers were for having an official language while most weren't. It's because of the time it limited an individuals freedoms. Even now many places don't require English as a language to get a job, get a benefit, apply for school. There have been politicans on both sides of the isle who wanted to adopt English has a federally recognized language. Their are few who want to make English and Spanish official language because more American speak Spanish than any other language commonly. English was the common language and it still is a common language but that could have been different if the french, Dutch, German, or any other European colonial took root more successfully here. Heck if the Germans or the Japanese won the war we'd be speaking one of those tongues instead. Philadelphia has many recognized languages locally, the official ones are English, Spanish, Mandarin. Because the cities many populaces speak these. Even if we adopted English I personally wouldn't care. Heck we could make French creo the official language that those in the beaua speak and I wouldn't care. Why must we fight over such trivial things? We don't have an official language so people don't fight about it.

PFC (Join to see) - Thanks for the history lesson, but that's not what I'm talking about. I know what the citizenship requirements are and I understand the fact that we have no official language.

21% of the population doesn't speak English. Why is that? Isn't language one of the things that supposed to bind a people together? Why not make English the official language?

Sgt (Join to see) There is no reason. It's not something anyone thinks about or cares to think about. You can't change something that's not established. It's like the whole national anthem debate, people focus on the star spangled banner, because it's our current national anthem as of 1931 but I'm sure most don't even know we had 4-5 other anthems before that. If people did know than changing the national anthem to Lift Every Voice and Sing wouldn't be such a big deal and there wouldn't be problems with it. This goes back to what I said earlier a dumb population causes outrage.
