Chosen to become director of the new Women's Reserve of the Coast Guard she named the newly founded reserve SPARS, an acronym combining the Coast Guard’s motto “Semper Paratus” with its English translation, Always Ready.

She made a huge impact in her life from the time she was in her 20s, and died at 107. What a stalwart woman.
