Ms. Daskal is a leadership coach, so she probably knows more about this than I. That being said, with all due respect to Ms. Daskal, I wouldn't quite say it like that. Here's how she needs to say it...

The above was only slightly tongue in cheek. In my experience every single one of her phrases is perfectly fine - in the right circumstances. I tell (and, more importantly) show people EXACTLY how to do things on a regular basis. It's called "training." In my current position, I am a bottom-of-the-totem-pole basement level worker. But I am still the assigned mentor for any new peer hires. Because I know how to not only speak in generalities, but I can teach specifics.

That being said can be used to GREAT effect, on YOUR OWN plans. We need to make sure x, y, and z happen - and fast! That being said, absolutely nothing we do is worth you getting injured, so stay safe out there, folks. It can help identify priority in two very important focus points.

With all due respect, SHOULD be a rarity. But it is legitimate - when sincere.

And so on. Each of those phrases has its place. We just need to make sure we keep them there.

I'm sitting here smiling... that's why I put the time allows and appropriate caveat. :)

I didn't see any military (Navy) experience in her resume. It's a Whole New World dealing with Sailors. Not so much now days, because peoples' feelings are a little more fragile and people are easily offended more so than back in the day,
but . . . . and I know I'm not supposed to use "but" because that cancels out what was said just prior to it,
however; how many of you old salts heard the phrase, "You can do it my way, or stand by for heavy rolls." . . . . . or . . . . "Do it like I told you, or you'll go see the old man."

That's why I used the caveats "sometimes in the military and professional technical work when time allows and appropriate". I don't personally agree with all of them because like SFC O'Mally mentioned if you provide proper guidance after making a statement, your new person will see why your way is better.

You're welcome. It's some good food for thought when developing talent for sustainability. As I type this I have to smile because as an almost lifelong civil servant it's been my experience the best boot licker gets promoted. :)
