My wife and mother-in-law say to leave them to the professionals. I don't buy into that but I do wear eye protection (thanks to the Army, I have plenty of that). Keep the little kids back and know where they are pointed if they shoot up. Also, if you are in a state that does not allow fireworks, look out for the police!

The basics: water any vegetation that could catch fire in advance, have a fire extinguisher on site as well as a first aid kit. Children should not be allowed to light fireworks without adult (active) supervision.

Keep them out of the reach of your kids and like a firearm, aim all fireworks in a safe direction.
