I have known Clarence for almost 54 years. He was a Sophomore at Holy Cross when I was a Freshman, and he crossed my consciousness quite often. I agree with him on very little, but I'm not surprised that he might refuse to follow customs and traditions. He was the beneficiary of a great deal of care, concern and love getting him to the College, as well as helping him stay there. Same with Yale. He resents that, and yet took complete advantage of it; he grew up speaking a dialect, so he's very conscious of his speaking, and so often doesn't speak during hearings. He rejected the College and the alumni for a number of years, and it was amazing that the Jesuit faculty who had been instrumental in getting him into the college continued to reach out and ignore the rejection. For sometime now, he's been more active as an alumni, visiting campus and visiting classes as well being accessible to HC interns serving in Washington.

If you're a religious type, Clarence probably needs your prayers. If not, as I am, at least reflect that he may be a power in the Judiciary, but he could have been a great deal more.
