I love this TV series about a newspaper columnist who tells every story in just 800 words. Really, 800? I'm beginning to wonder if modern readers can handle it. My first novel was about 120,000 words and readers swooned at the challenge. Few made the attempt. My next was told in 40,000 words. Damn, I could really tell one in a third of the number I employed in my first novel. These days I write stories in about 400 words. It seems that one day writers will engage in a game reminiscent of Name That Tune. I'll offer to tell it in 400 and my opponent will respond with 200. I'll offer 100 and they'll retort with 50. Readers are going to love us, aren't they?
