1.) Many dark chocolates have high levels of cadmium and lead, study finds

Published Dec. 19, 2022

Dive Brief:

* Twenty-three of 28 dark chocolate bars tested by Consumer Reports had high levels of cadmium or lead, a report by the consumer testing publication found. Five had high levels of both heavy metals.

* Brands that had more of the heavy metals included dark chocolates from Theo, a bar from Lily’s (owned by Hershey), a bar from Green & Black’s, and a Trader Joe’s branded dark chocolate bar, the report states. Offerings from Ghirardelli, Mast, Valrhona and Taza Chocolate had less of both cadmium and lead.

* Chocolate makers have long been aware of the cadmium and lead levels that can be present in dark varieties. Following litigation and a settlement reached four years ago, many are trying to reduce the amounts of heavy metals in their confections.

2.) Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate

Consumer Reports found dangerous heavy metals in chocolate from Hershey's, Theo, Trader Joe's and other popular brands. Here are the ones that had the most, and some that are safer.

* CR's Chocolate Test ResultsWe tested 28 dark chocolate bars for lead and cadmium. To determine the risk posed by the chocolates in CR’s test, we used California's maximum allowable dose level (MADL) for lead (0.5 micrograms) and cadmium (4.1mcg). Shown are the percentages of the MADL supplied in an ounce of each chocolate. Our results indicate which products had comparatively higher levels and are not assessments of whether a product exceeds a legal standard. We used those levels because there are no federal limits for the amount of lead and cadmium most foods can contain, and CR’s scientists believe that California’s levels are the most protective available. While both cadmium and lead pose serious health risks, products within each category are listed in order of lead level, because that heavy metal poses particular concerns and no amount of it is considered

* safe.Below 100% CR's
* levelsAbove 100% CR's levels

Better Ways to Eat Dark Chocolate

Calculating the exact amount of dark chocolate that’s risky to eat is complicated. That’s because heavy metal levels can vary, people have different risk levels, and chocolate is just one potential source of heavy metal exposure. But experts say that by being mindful of the risks, you can still enjoy dark chocolate while minimizing the potential harms.

"Does Hershey's Chocolate contain lead and cadmium?
It found five varieties contained excess lead and cadmium: Theo’s organic pure dark and organic extra dark, Green and Black’s organic dark, Trader Joe’s the dark chocolate and Lily’s extremely dark. Hershey’s special dark mildly sweet chocolate contained 265 per cent of the recommended lead intake in California."
