A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing at least 641 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.
On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy winter night, as buildings were flattened and strong aftershocks continued.

Lt Col Charlie Brown I heard about this a few minutes ago on the news. Prayer for all the families of those killed in the quake.

Horrible thing but also stirred a memory. When I was in Turkey I had to attend a meeting in Ankara. We arrived early so sat outside the building where the meeting was held to wait. Across the street they were building a highrise and we watched the concrete pouring operation. It consisted of a team of men with wheelbarrows being filled on the ground then walking on doublewide boards angled up around the outside of the building up to the level of the pour. We all sort of laughed and said we wouldn't want to be in that building during an earthquake.

Prayers out to all those involved. If you've never been through a quake, even a mild one, it's scary as hell. Now, next we wait and see how much the US is going to give away to help. (Pardon my cynicism, but you know it's coming)
